SYDNEY WRITERS' FESTIVAL

  

Word Travels hits the Sydney Writer's Festival! We are on fire with seven smoking hot events in the program this year. And better yet, most of them are FREE!

 

Troubadours and Minstrels FREE - SOLD OUT

Greeted by your troubadour who instructs you ‘to follow the music’, four minstrels lead the audience to alcoves, underpasses and secret corners; which become the backdrop for spoken-word performances.

Rap, poetry, story, monologue . . . Whatever you do with words. No props. No music. Just a mic in the spotlight. Young poets from Western Sydney battle it out with eloquence and wit representing their communities while competing for audience love and a grand prize. Featuring DJ/Poet Scott Sandwich, Jo Sri and Miles Merrill.

Performance poets Kate Tempest and Anis Mojgani are both described as ‘fierce’ and ‘genius’ - a potent combination. Londoner Kate is a published playwright, poet and respected recording artist. American spoken word poet, visual artist and musician Anis has been characterised a ‘geek genius’ with ‘fiercely hopeful word arias’. Here in Sydney, their worlds and words collide. Chair: Miles Merrill.

AUCKLAND WRITERS FESTIVAL

  

Auckland Writers' Festival

Not satisfied with conquering the Sydney Writers' Festival, Word Travels also hits kiwi shores with a series of workshops and events at the Auckland Writers' Festival worth writing home about.

  

WORKSHOP: MILES MERRILL, WRITE TO SPEAK

  

Can you deliver a speech without a prop, aka Powerpoint? Does your audience nod off?  This workshop uses one of poetry’s defining characteristics - saying more with less - to get you delivering a speech with punch. Write To Speak looks at using live story-telling to get your message across. You’ll explore many aspects of performing and writing from holding a microphone to tightening your text.  Limited to 20 participants.  Supported by the Australia Council for the Arts.

POETRY IDOL

Poetry Idol is our rambunctious, sell-out slam in which 10 poets - from fledglings to the old hands - go head-to-head for the Festival Champion crown, and $500, under the guidance of Hot Pink Poet Penny Ashton.
