Rainer Maria Rilke is one of the twentieth century's most iconic and influential poets. Countless thinkers, artists, musicians and poets since have felt compelled to get the measure of him and his work in translations, versions and reworkings (although he did not know English and even despised some aspects of Anglo-Saxon culture).
Karen Leeder, recognised as one of the leading authorities on Rilke's work and a brilliant German translator herself, will discuss Rilke’s singular voice and explore translations and versions though close readings of key and lesser-known poems.
This workshop will look at Rilke's early explorative, existential poetry, his use of colour and form in his revolutionary ‘thing poems’ (New Poems); and the blending of myth and the earthly in his marvellous late work, focus\sing on how life becomes art, form and feeling, and the proximity of translation/adaptation and writing, among many other themes.
There is also the option to purchase a RECORDING if the timing doesn't suit you.
Content Warning: Most Poetry Slams and literary events are all ages and some content may not be suitable for children. Performances may include strong language and / or adult themes.
Event times local time.
