WHERE: The Moon Café, 323 William Street, Northbridge, Perth WA 6000
Start:

Perth Poetry Club with wonderful poet Don Smith + open-mic at The Moon Café. Celebrate poetry.
Don Smith has worked as an actor, comedian, clown and clown doctor at Princess Margaret hospital and musician since the early eighties. He's had poems published in Recoil 9 and Recoil 10 and won third prize in the MIFWA Open Your Mind Poetry Competition in October 2023. These days he writes poems and songs, and is working with his band – The Muriels – on original songs, mainly written by him, in preparation for recording. He likes playing bridge and sailing his dinghy on the river. A lot of his poetry is focused on euphemism and deceptive language, and also on ways to deal with the effects us Wadgelas have had on the Noongar people and their land (boodja) here in WA.

Don performed in the first play by Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company called Runamuk, and has worked on various script developments for Yirra Yaakin. He also performed in two plays for Theatre Kimberley in the late nineties. He values the connections he's made with aboriginal writers, actors and directors, especially given his mother was a Brockman, an old colonial family with familial connections to the Bussels and Princeps going back to 1829.

Join Perth Poetry Club to celebrate poetry.
